"Travel has a way of stretching the mind. The stretch comes not from travel's immediate rewards, the inevitable myriad new sights, smells and sounds, but with experiencing firsthand how others do differently what we believed to be the right and only way."

TRAVEL BOOKSTORES
Not only a great place to buy your next guidebook or travel memoir, but these stores also feature regular in-store programs with travel writers.
Book Passage :: (Corte Madera, San Francisco Bay Area, CA)
This is a full service book store with a strong specialty in travel. Their travel section is so big that it's in an adjoining building and sells travel related gifts and accessories as well. Check out their event listings for top name travel writers and their renowned annual travel writer's conference held in August. Out of town, or can't stop by? BP often makes their bigger name events available online.
California Map & Travel Center :: (Santa Monica, CA)
The online accompaniment to their brick and mortar store is thorough. Beyond books,
Mapper.com sells GPS and navigation software, globes, and heaps of language audio programs and dictionaries from more places than you thought there were tapes for. Azerbaijan? Yep. Urdu - what's that? Well, they've got it. Go ahead, test them.
Distant Lands :: (Pasadena, CA)
This well-stocked travel bookstore and shop has a friendly staff that's willing to go the extra mile to be an invaluable resource for travelers. Their store was founded with the mission to create an atmosphere conducive to browsing and the love of travel - and they've succeeded.
Easy Going Travel Shop and Bookstore :: (Berkeley, CA)
Just one stop for all your travel needs. Their staff is friendly, well traveled, and generous with advice for independent travelers who want to know a culture in depth before their trip. Don't miss their great free events-current calendar of speakers and programs can be found online.
Get Lost Travel Books, Maps, and Gear :: (San Francisco, CA)
Owner Lee Azus does a great job with this SF Upper Market neighborhood store. Check them out online or when you're in town. They have friendly service, regular events and the Web site has good recommendations for your next good read.
Powell's :: (Portland, OR)
One of the best known independent stores, and covers more than travel. They have a great website, and like I already mentioned, good author interviews.
Savvy Traveller :: (Chicago, IL)
For all kinds of travelers...business, family, adventure, and dreamers. Everything for the traveler is here but your ticket.
Wide World Books & Maps :: (Seattle, WA)
Circa 1976, they claim to be the first travel only book store in the country. The staff consists of avid travelers, so who knows when or how they make time to run the shop. Check them out. Again, another great place to hear the latest adventures from authors of current travel books.
